Central Heating Repair & Heating Engineer in London

A heating system is more than the boiler: pipes, radiators, valves, pump, controls and the water inside all affect how warm your home gets and how much gas you use. We find out why rooms are cold or bills are high and fix the cause.

Problems we solve

  • • Cold radiators
  • • Some rooms not heating
  • • Noisy pipes and radiators
  • • Leaking radiator valves
  • • Thermostat and control faults

Signs you may notice

  • • Radiators cold at the bottom
  • • Black water when bleeding radiators
  • • High gas bills
  • • Boiler cycling on and off

Before you call

  • • Note which rooms or radiators are cold
  • • Check the boiler pressure
  • • Send photos of the radiators and thermostat

Heating problems we fix

Most of these problems are easy to spot once you know the signs.

  • ✓ Radiators cold at the top: trapped air, needs bleeding and re-pressurising
  • ✓ Radiators cold at the bottom: sludge (magnetite) build-up
  • ✓ Some rooms warm, others cold: system needs balancing
  • ✓ Noisy pipes and radiators: air, pump speed or loose pipework
  • ✓ Thermostat, programmer and smart control faults
  • ✓ Leaking radiator valves and towel rails

Sludge, powerflushing and filters

Over time, steel radiators and pipes corrode and release black sludge. It reduces heat output, blocks pipes and wears out the boiler pump and heat exchanger. Depending on the condition we can recommend a chemical clean, a powerflush, an inhibitor top-up and a magnetic system filter to protect the boiler.

Upgrades that save energy

Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs), a room thermostat and properly balanced radiators let the boiler run at lower temperatures, which is where condensing boilers are most efficient.

  • ✓ TRV fitting and replacement
  • ✓ Room thermostats and smart controls
  • ✓ Radiator replacement and repositioning
  • ✓ System balancing

How to bleed a radiator safely

Bleeding removes trapped air so hot water can fill the whole radiator.

  • ✓ Turn the heating off and let radiators cool
  • ✓ Open the bleed valve a quarter turn with a radiator key and hold a cloth underneath
  • ✓ Close it as soon as water, not air, comes out
  • ✓ Check the boiler pressure afterwards and top up if it has dropped below 1 bar

Flow temperature and running costs

Condensing boilers are most efficient when the water returning to the boiler is cool. Lowering the flow temperature, with radiators correctly sized and balanced, can cut gas use while still keeping rooms comfortable.

FAQ

Do I need a powerflush?

Not always. If radiators are cold at the bottom and the water is black when bled, a clean is usually worth it. We'll check first rather than sell one by default.

Why is one radiator cold when the rest are hot?

Common causes are a stuck valve pin, trapped air or poor balancing. It's usually a quick fix.

How often should I bleed my radiators?

Only when you notice cold spots at the top or gurgling. Needing to bleed very often suggests air is entering the system and should be investigated.

What does balancing a heating system mean?

Adjusting the lockshield valves so each radiator gets the right share of hot water, so rooms far from the boiler heat up as well as nearby ones.

Are smart thermostats worth it?

They help when your routine varies, allowing heating by schedule or phone. Savings depend on how the heating was controlled before.
