Electrician in London for Faults, Sockets & Lighting

Electrical faults should never be guessed at. We test circuits properly to find why a breaker trips or a light won't work, then repair it safely.

Problems we solve

  • • Circuit breaker keeps tripping
  • • Faulty sockets and switches
  • • Lights not working
  • • New lighting fittings

Signs you may notice

  • • Power cuts in part of the home
  • • Burning smell or scorch marks
  • • Flickering lights
  • • Warm sockets

Before you call

  • • Never touch damaged wiring
  • • Note which circuit trips
  • • Unplug appliances on that circuit

Why does my breaker or RCD keep tripping?

An MCB trips when a circuit is overloaded or short-circuited. An RCD trips when it detects current leaking to earth, often from a faulty appliance, water getting into an outside light or socket, or damaged cable. We isolate circuits and appliances one by one and use an insulation resistance tester to find the fault.

Electrical work we carry out

Small jobs welcome.

  • ✓ Fault finding and tripping circuits
  • ✓ Replacing sockets, switches and faceplates
  • ✓ Adding sockets and USB sockets
  • ✓ Ceiling lights, downlights and outdoor lighting
  • ✓ Extractor fan connections
  • ✓ Fused spurs for appliances and boilers

Warning signs not to ignore

Switch off at the consumer unit and call for help if you notice any of these.

  • ✓ Burning smell or scorch marks around sockets
  • ✓ Sockets or plugs that feel warm
  • ✓ Buzzing from switches or the fuse box
  • ✓ Lights flickering when appliances switch on

Understanding your consumer unit (fuse box)

Knowing the parts of your fuse box helps you describe the problem quickly.

  • ✓ Main switch: turns off all power in the home
  • ✓ MCBs: protect each circuit (lights, sockets, cooker) from overload and short circuits
  • ✓ RCDs / RCBOs: protect people by cutting power when current leaks to earth
  • ✓ Old rewireable fuses: a sign the installation may need checking

Finding the cause of an RCD trip

Switch all MCBs off, reset the RCD, then turn circuits back on one at a time. If one circuit trips it, unplug everything on it and plug items back in one by one. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs testing.

FAQ

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Often a faulty appliance or a wiring fault. We'll test the circuit to find the cause.

Is it safe to keep resetting the breaker?

If it trips again straight away, stop. There is a fault on that circuit and it needs testing.

Why do my lights flicker?

A loose bulb or connection, an incompatible dimmer with LED bulbs, or a loose connection in the circuit. Flickering with a burning smell needs urgent attention.

Can you add extra sockets?

Yes, we can add new sockets or USB sockets by extending an existing circuit where it's safe to do so.

Can I change a light fitting myself?

It's safest to use someone competent. Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit first, not just the wall switch.
